Francesco Bagnaia has revealed that he apologised to his Ducati MotoGP team during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, saying he wants to change his approach to racing after a challenging start to the 2025 season.

The reigning two-time world champion has struggled to find front-end confidence on the new GP25 bike and has experimented with various settings, but none have consistently resolved the issues. At Assen, Bagnaia admitted he was taking the wrong approach and decided to be more aligned with the team’s direction.

“I had a small meeting with my team, with the engineers, and I have only apologised because I want to change,” he told DAZN. “I want to go more in the direction of the team, because so far few things have solved the problems. I want to do more laps, be more prepared for the races. This season has been complicated, so we need a change.”

He added that he often focuses too much on small issues after only a lap or two, instead of getting more track time to gain a broader understanding. “I’ve always been very sensitive. If I don’t like something on the bike, I feel it immediately. But that doesn’t help much if I only do one or two laps.”

Bagnaia’s sprint race woes continued at Assen, where he dropped from second to fifth at the start and couldn’t recover. However, he performed better on Sunday, recovering to finish third behind Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi after briefly losing the lead.

“I always do the same thing: I start, everyone overtakes me and I watch them for the rest of the race. I can’t attack, I can’t do anything. But it’s entirely my problem,” Bagnaia said. “I’m 95 percent sure that if Saturday’s situation happened on Sunday, I would move forward easily. But I don’t know how to improve the sprint race.”
